Chapter Ten

As Abby rushed around her room and threw clothes all over the place, she told herself she had no reason to be nervous. This wasn’t real; it was just to take photos for Martha and Patrice. Noah was glad to help because he understood the situation. This was a temporary, fake relationship. After his arm healed, the illusion would be up and they could go back to their normal lives.

There was a cold sting when she thought about a world, not only without Martha, but also without Noah. She found she was enjoying his company more and more, which surprised her. Abby even caught herself wondering if this ruse for photos was a subconscious effort to spend more time with him, but she didn’t allow herself to dwell on it. She had to focus on the best way to wear three changes of clothes.

They had decided on a nicer photo outside Mrs. Roberta’s pizza place, a casual photo at the ballfield, and a hiking photo in the mountains. So they could start with nicer clothes, change to T-shirts, and end with tank tops. Should be easy enough, right? But Abby also had to consider hair and makeup, and he had to consider how to strategically hide his injured arm in every photo. Abby huffed, looking at herself in the mirror. She had to be asking too much, wasn’t she? So why was he going along with it when he had almost nothing invested in the situation?

She could guess the reason why, but she shook her head again, refusing to acknowledge it.

Just as she finished picking the right tops for each photo, Abby’s phone rang, and Hannah’s face popped up on the caller ID. Racking her brain for a way to approach the situation delicately, she answered. “Hello?”

“Hey Abby,” Hannah said, her voice light. “How’s it going?”

“Great, how are you? How’s your mom?”

“All good here, no worries.” Hannah cleared her throat. “I’m with Candace because we came to visit Grandma Pearl and take her shopping. We asked Noah if he wanted to come, and he said he had plans with you. That you’re going on a date.”

“What’s going on?!” Candace shouted from the background.

Abby laughed, choosing her words carefully. “Yes, we are going on a date.”

“Why didn’t you say anything before?” Candace asked. “I thought you didn’t like him.”

“I know, but things can change.” Abby cringed. It was the truth, but not the whole truth. She hated lying to her friends, but if Grandma Pearl already heard, then there was still a chance it could get back to Martha too, and Abby didn’t want to risk anything.

“I feel like there’s something you’re not sharing,” Hannah said. “Are you sure everything is okay?”

Hannah always knew. She had such a way of reading people, even over the phone. “I’m fine. I can’t tell you everything right now, but I will soon, I promise.”

“Well, if that’s not even more ominous,” Candace said.

“Okay, well have fun on your date,” Hannah said, emphasizing the last word.
